BILOXI ERECTED INTO A CUSTOM HOUSE STATION
A FESTIVE DAY
Biloxi, Miss., Sept. 1?, 1892— (Special)
Another important event took plade here today which will redound immensely to the businfess interests of the place, and that was the establishment ^and .final opening of the Port* of Biloxi as a Deputy Cusfon^House with Thomas Cleary as Depujty.. Collector.
For many years past, vessels bound for Ship Island have been compelled to enter and clear either at Bay £t... .Louis., or Pascagoula, thereby entailing a considerable unnecessary expense and delay. By the arrangement completed today, which is due to the interest manifested by Judge W. G. Henderson, Collector of Customs at Bay St. Louis, and his efficient special Deputy, C. A. Simpson, all vessels hereafter loading at Ship Island will transact their business at the Custom House,,at. Biloxi.
The establishment of this office will result in a saving of over $2500 to owners of small vessels belonging to Biloxi who heretofore have teen compelled to go to Bay St. Louis or Pascagoula at least once a year to renew their license and to change Masters.
Of the 225 vessels owned in the District, over 100 belong to Bilo?
The office was formally opened by Special C. A. Simpson in the presence of the Mayor and citizens generally, amid the booming of cannon strains of first-class trass bands.
Deputy Collector Fire Department and and soul-stirring
The honor of unfurling the first flag that ever floated over a Custom House in Biloxi was awarded to Eula, the pretty little 8-year-o! daughter of our townsman, VI. K. K. Dukate.
After a while Hon. F. W. Elmer, in
few well
Vi
delivered and
fitting remarks, thanked Judge Henderson and Mr. Simpson for the interest which they had taken in Biloxi’s tusiness welfare, which was replied to by Mr. Simpson in the proper manner.
