Tazewell Morton relates his art to gumbo...rich with spice. He grew up on the Mississippi Gulf Coast where life by the sea had an early and lasting impact on him.
Tazewell received a Bachelor of Applied Arts degree from Alabama Polytechnic Institute, now Auburn University He worked as an award-winning graphic designer for thirty-plus years, interspersing teaching at the University of Georgia, Auburn University, University of New Orleans and Appalachian State University. While teaching at Auburn, he designed the Auburn flag that was placed on the moon by fellow Auburn alumnus, astronaut Ken Mattingly, during the Apollo 16 flight, making Tazewell the first artist whose work was “exhibited” on the moon.
Now devoting his creative time to producing art in a myriad of media - clay, acrylics, watercolors, pen and ink, wood and wire - Tazewell’s work depicts fanciful, vivid impressions of his past.

Memories of the old bridge with locals crabbing from the sides inspired his piece for the new bridge. “This is a reminder of the way it was before the storm. They won’t let us crab from the new bridge which is good luck for the crabs.”
Tazewell’s life and his art are as complicated and as rich as the delicacy he describes as “Mardi Gras in a bowl.” His work is appreciated by connoisseurs throughout the country.
