Area School Teachers Attend TRC Workshop
Thirty area kingergarten through 12th grade teachers from southern Mississippi and southeastern Louisiana attended a Computer Applications Workshop Oct. 8 hosted by Stennis Space Center's Teacher Resource Center (TRC).
The hands-on workshop gave teachers insight on the use of computers in the classroom and the types of software appropriate for the age level or subject unique to each educator. In addition, educators were instructed on how and where this software could be obtained.
After being welcomed by SSC’s Aerospace Education Specialist John Wilson, area teachers were given demonstrations of commercial and “freeware/shareware" software. Cliff Williams, marketing information systems coordinator, Mississippi Power Co., gave a presentation on telecommunications. Highlighting the workshop were two sessions during which teachers were given the opportunity to apply the techniques they learned.
This Computer Applications Workshop is just one of the 23 free education workshops being offered at Stennis Space Center during the 1991-92 school year to area educators.
"Creative Communication” and ‘‘Marine Science for Elementary School Teachers” are two workshops to be held at the TRC later this month. The Creative Communication workshop will help teachers of all grade levels improve creative writing and speaking skills. The Marine Science Workshop will focus on biological and geological marine science, ecosystems and the problem of marine litter. It also features hands-on activities that teachers can take back to the classroom and share with their elementary school students.
Some of the other workshop topics being offered at SSCs Teacher Resource Center during the school year include science and engineering careers, mathematics, meteorology, free or inexpensive resources for teachers, current topics in education, Space Shuttle, Earth Day, physics, earth science and archaeology.
