Hancock County Courthouse Landscape and Site Design
A recent study of the condition of all site landscaping at the coijrtlicmse^revealed that several of the existing trees suffered from old age, disease and poor location or proximity to the building. The last of these resulting in damage to the courthouse and its foundations. This caused designers to review the state of all site vegetation and propose options for redesign taking into consideration the widening of both Gex and Cue Streets to accommodate angled parking.
The plan you see today shows the addition of angled parking and the loss of two good large sycamore trees and one magnolia as a result. Additionally one live oak, one water oak and one yew tree will be lost as their location adjacent to the steps at the Main Street entrance to the Courthouse has uplifted sidewalks and dislodged foundations for those steps. While the loss of any tree is something to be avoided, the sycamores show signs of advanced disease and, along with the other specimens mentioned, suffer from poor location that interferes with either the building or the proposed parking layout. Magnolias and live oaks must be replaced as part of the redesign and have been accounted for in the new layout. New specimens of live oak to the left and right of the main entry and a new magnolia to match the existing one to flank the sidewalk leading up to the front door.
This site layout attempts to highlight both the existing and new monuments at the front of the building, highlight the entry with new azaleas and crepe myrtles and provide fragrant specimens of sweet olive at the specific parking areas.
Additional specimens may be added to the plan at the east, west and south sides of the structure once the final cost have been determined for the Courthouse ADA improvements as this work is being provided under that contract.
