More Christmas In August
The Jefferson Parish Doll and Toy Fund will be at the d’Iberville High School gym at 1 p.m. Sunday to distribute toys to children in the area.
P. E. Raymond, 408 Central Ave., was visitng in Jefferson Parish last week and a friend of his, Patrick Burke, president of the Jefferson Parish School Board, inquired what the people of the parish could do to render assistance after the hurricane.
Raymond told him that the area had sufficient food, clothing and medical supplies and Burke suggested bringing toys for the children.
The Jefferson Parish Doll and Toy Fund collects toys the year around and distributes them to needy children at Christmas.
Burke said he will bring toys for about 1,000 children to North Biloxi.
Library Inventory Taken At Guifport
The Gulfport-Harrison County Library is attempting to take inventory of Hurricane Camille losses.
“This is a slow, painstaking process,” stated Miss Maria Person, librarian. “We need to know exactly what is missing in order to give greater publicity to what is needed in the way of replacement.”
“Many libraries, publishers and dealers are eager to help when we can pin-point what the greatest losses are,” she said.
To facilitate this task, library patrons are requested to begin returning books they have finished. However, if they are enjoying the books and want to hold them until the library officially reopens, they are urged to notify library workers of the author and title of the book so they will know it is safe.
Miss Persons said if books were washed away or damaged beyond repair, the patron is urged to report his name so
that all books charged to him can be marked as lost.
She said this should be reported within the next two or three weeks as the librarians would like a complete report.
There is only one book drop at the library in working order at the front door that can be used when the library is closed. Patrons are asked not to use the back book drop.
No overdue fines will be charged, according to Miss Person.
Patrons with art reproductions are urged to hold them unless the patrons are leaving town. The same rule applys to records and films. The library has no place to keep them at present.
The telephone at the library was connected last week so patrons can report on books, but at the present time library workers are not in a position to do any reference work.
