Nasa’s John C. Stennis Space Center The Stennis Space Center has become a favorite Mississippi attraction for visitors coming from SO states and over 60 foreign countries. The Stennis Space Center is 15 miles from the Waveland Hospitality Center off Interstate 10 on Hwy 607 North. This is one of the Mississippi Gulf Coast's leading tourist attractions with visitors coming from all 50 states and over 60 foreign countries. Stennis is one of eight NASA field centers and NASA's primary rocket test facility. All main engines used to power the Space Shuttle are proven acceptable for flight here at Stennis before an actual mission. Because of its important role in engine testing over the past three decades, Stennis Space Center has been designated NASA’s Center of Excellence for large propulsion systems testing. Visitors are given a guided bus tour of the Space Shuttle test complex where you can view a main engine firing when tests are conducted. Guests also see a 7 1/2 - mile manmade Panama Canal-type lock system through which large rocket propulsion systems and propellants are transported to three massive test stands. Outside the Visitors Center, guests may observe a massive 154-foot Space Shuttle external fuel tank, a Saturn V rocket that took America's astronauts to the moon,an F-1 engine that powered the first stage of the Saturn rocket, and a 68-foot Jupiter-C rocket. Also on display are a data buoy and a two-man submersible. Visitors prepare for one of the many tours offered daily at Stennis Space Center.
