Wood - Canvas freight canoe no name as yet
Built by David Edgar of Jackman Maine in 1993
18-8 x 3-6 Draft n/a.’ Comfortably carries well over 1000lbs in rough water.
We’ll exhibit the boat on trailer on Saturday at least. We may make Friday or Sunday as well. It depends on my (unpredictable) business obligations.
History -
David Edgar has built wood - canvas boats throughout his adult life. Freight canoes are a relatively recent development for him. Our hull is one of about a dozen built so far. His freight canoes see rough service on large lakes and rivers in northern Maine and eastern Canada. They are mainly owned by professional guides, but at least two are in family service. We chose the design because we could explore and fish small backwaters along the Gulf Coast without difficulty in getting home across large, open bays. The vessel has fulfilled our expectations very well, giving a comfortable, dry ride at about 9 MPH using a 3.3HP outboard. The boat will handle more power, but we really have not needed it.	"	*
David selects and mills his own ash, cedar, and cherry near his garage size shop behind his home. Most of the hull is cedar. He also restores wood - canvas canoes. Building ceases when the temperature goes below zero and stays - about Thanksgiving to late February. We ordered our boat in August and took delivery during the following summer.
