My parents and I moved to LaSalle Terrice, Chalmette, Louisiana in 1940. Daddy and Mama tore an old house down and used the timber to build the new house. The old house was located in Braithwaith, La. Daddy first built a garage and we lived in it until the house was finished enough to live in. I attended Meraux School in Chalmette, Louisiana for two years. I attended first and second grade. When I was seven and one half years old, April 1942, we moved to Duck Hill, Mississippi to Daddy's farm (320) acres. This place was owned by my grandfather, James Randolph Bell, purchased in November 1897. It has been in our family since it was purchased by my grandfather. We lived in an old log house, which I loved. Daddy and Momma tore the old house down in 1959 and built a new one with a full basement in the ground. I hated to see the old house come down. I wanted Daddy to restore it, but he wanted a new one. SCHOOL NAMES ONCE WIDELY KNOWN The numerals beside the titles indicate the years in shich the schools were named, constructed or opened. The dates are gleaned from school board minutes, superintendents' reports, city directories and news articles. CHALMETTE (1863) The school received its name from the area which became famous as the site of the battle of New Orleans while it was a plantation of Ignace de Lino Chalmette. He was bom August 23,1755, at New Orleans, and died there February 10,1815. The later date was just five weeks after his handsome home had been destroyed during the climactic conflict in the War of 1812. Grace King, who wrote about Louisianians, gave Philippe de Marigny credit for persuading Chalmette, a relative by marriage, to purchase the property as an investment. The tract never rewarded Chalmette financially, but it gave him a sense of satisfaction and well being. It also perpetuated his name in a manner he never imagined.
