EXCURSION OF VOLUNTER NO. 1 TO BILOXI
The boys of this staunch old company took their departure on Friday evening last (August 16, 1878) for Biloxi by way of the Mobile Road. After a pleasant ride of four hours Biloxi was reached.
Here a large crowd awaited them, and after falling into line, the Company proceeded to their headquarters, the "Hole in the Wall," where they were received amid the booming of cannon and the cheers of the multitude. Large bonfires were burning on the beach, and the utmost enthusiasm prevailed.
After a splendid supper served by Mrs. Smith the boys retired for the night.
Hotel Ball
On Saturday night a grand display of fire works vas made, followed by a Grand Ball in the spacious Hall of the Hotel, at which the fairest daughters of Biloxi vere to be seen gliding in the mazes of the dance.
On Sunday evening the boys took their departure from the Hotel, the band playing that dear old air "Home, Sweet Hone."
The Comnany then proceeded to the house of Mr. Scheffer, where they were the recipients of a beautiful rustic wreath. They were then asked to partake of the refreshments, which they did in noble style.
Ifflgpot Departure
After serenading everal of their friends, including Mr. Joe Ferrer, the Company headed for the Depot to the tune of "Sweet By-and-By."
The crowd of ladies at the Depot was so great that it was with difficulty our coach was reached.
At 6 o'clock we moved away amid cheers and the waving of-handkerchiefs, and Biloxi vith its many pleasures and fair ladies was soon lost to view.
Taken as a whole, the excursion was a complete success, nothing occurring to mar our pleasures.
