The following are letters written by Jacob and Mary Jane Gause Poitevent to William Henry FitzGerald, her half brother, at the time of the yellow fever epidemic in Grenada, Miss. A few days after these letters were written, Jacob and Mary Jane died with yellow fever.

Dear William
I suppose you have herd of our safe arival at home from that delightful Sea Coast. I am still improving - but am sorry to say that we jumped out of the Frying Pan into the fire. We have the genuine Yellow Fever in our Town - it has been confined to three blocks comencing at Misters Old Stand on Main Street to Stevenson Carriage Factory running to the ? Depot. Had two deaths day before yesterday and 4 up to 4 oclock today making 6 deaths from it.. There is about 50 now sick - in these Blocks - of about 1 - sick in all in the Town - but dont suppose half is Yellow fever (Deaths to day are Wm Shankle Old Mrs. Willson & her Daugh Mrs. Davidson -Mrs. Ingrahan (about 5 or ? more not expected to live - Fields -Derick (at Jones - Moon the Merchant Crowder T. Peacock with Gus Lake - Gus Lake has 4 down sick I am well and all the family except Ora She has had a fever but Clare of it to day your Sister went out to Dr. Fs. this morning - looking for her back to night - Dr. R. wants us to go out to his house I am willing for Family to go but your Sister wants me and all to will determine to morrow Maggie Coffman is verry ill not expected to live (with Yellow fever) Dr. H is nearly worne out
-	the Odd Fellows has despatched for nurses. Many leaving Town frightened nearly to death but my People appare to take it calmily Dr. Fitz has had the fever - in N. York I have been with it so we are not so easily Frighten this Sunday evening the Town nearly looks dessolate had a good Rain this evening and in hopes helth will improve Love to all
