Mississippi Power also owns a combustion turbine generating station at Pascagoula and jointly owns with Alabama Power Company a generating plant in Creen County, Alabama. Mississippi Power now has under construction a one-inillion-kilowatt plant in Jackson County. One of Mississippi Power’s most notable building projects was the completion of the $2.5-million multi-story general office building in Gulfport. The beautiful structure, located on West Beach along U.S. Highway 90, was opened in 1969. That year was perhaps the most dramatic in Mississippi Power Company’s history Only four months after the office building was opened, the new structure and Mississippi Power’s entire service area and system were the target of Hurricane Camille. Prior planning and preparation based on years of hurricane experience were key factors in the company’s rapid restoration of electric service following the devastation. In fighting to restore the way of life which Camille had almost destroyed, Mississippi Power Company received the 1969 Edison Award, the electric utility industry’s highest honor, for outstanding service in restoring electric power. Today, the company maintains a network of some 2,032 miles of high voltage transmission lines, 4,155 miles of distribution lines, and 179 substations. Local offices are located in 27 municipalities throughout the service area, with division offices at Gulfport, Hattiesburg, Laurel, and Meridian. As of December 31, 1974, MPC’s gross plant investment was $460.4 million, which included $81.1 million of construction in progress. These past 50 years have made Mississippi Power a determined organization of people — determined to produce new ideas about how to better serve the company’s customers, its stockholders, its state, and its citizens during the next 50 vears. ★ THE ONLY BANK YOU’LL EVER NEED Ten Convenient Locations to Serve You on the Great and Growing Gulf Coast.
