NEW OCEAN SPRINGS CIVIC CENTER - Highway 90 East (Bienville Blvd.). Completed in 1989, this impressive brick building contains 16,223 square feet of auditorium, meeting rooms, kitchen, dressing rooms and other spaces, well fulfilling the burgeoning needs of the city. A two-story structure with the second floor being a bowshaped balcony, the high, open, two-level ceiling with curved back wall and curved stage fills the viewer with a sense of space and light. The exterior presents a beautiful ceramic mosaic mural depicting a bayou scene of two men fishing from a small boat and overhead birds, a natural mural for the area. The grounds contain a War Veterans Memorial. Fountain and Lamas, Ltd. were the architectural firm, with general construction by Lloyd T. Moon, Inc. 2. HOME OF MRS. ANN MORETON - 2305 Bienville Blvd. This comfortable place-for-living is a renovated one-story farmhouse. The original section is about 100 years old and has twice had additions, with a Victorian effect. It is said that the original owner lived in Africa and that steamers came up Fort Bayou to load watermelons and grapes. Because the grapevines were a popular choice with bees, the vineyards were abandoned. The whole estate, known as Chinquapin Farm, now houses three residences, one belonging to a daughter and the other to a son of the Moretons. The grounds and house are designed to please the laige family connections, with a shoo-fly around a magnificent old, registered Live Oak and a walkway from the kitchen leads out to an enormous deck under a huge Magnolia. Not forgotten in the many hundreds of camellia bushes on the property is a special place for the children. A full play yard is located at the west side of the house shaded by big oaks. 3. HOME OF DR. AND MRS. RICHARD FURR - 1616 Warren Drive. The home is quietly situated at the end of a street and is set back on grounds with lots of trees. It is interesting that the landscaping was done by Sarah Furr, daughter of the Furrs, who is a landscaping architect while the renovation of the home was done by a son. Sam Furr, an architect. A raised cottage, outside walls are of cedar shakes, with French doors and many large windows. Living areas of the house are open, but can be closed for privacy. Stained glass includes Walter Anderson’s “Wood Lily”. 4. MARBLE SPRINGS - 1109 Iberville Drive. Marble Springs is one of a few remaining of the formerly-flowing springs for which the city was named. This one is marked by the Old VFW Hut, others are at Bayou Chateau, with one close to the Bayou on Vermont and one at the L&N RR depot. When surface wells were dug to furnish water for the growth of Ocean Springs, the water levels apparently dropped to dry the springs which provided mineral water for bathing and drinking to the famous Ocean Springs Health Resorts in the last half of the 19th century.
