together.
“God blesses us and we need to honor him. Without the church, what is the community. Without the volunteers I don't know where we would be. They are angels and their wings have touched our lives and given us the hope and inspiration to rebuild."
Greater Mt. Zion was built at its present location in Pearlington in the mid 1960's. It was built as a replacement for Big Mt. Zion, the original church lost in Logtown, when the federal government seized 40 percent of Hancock County by eminent domain to build Stennis Space Center, forcing the residents of Logtown and many other communities in west Hancock County to abandon their homes and towns.
The Rev. Robert Sams, paster of the church for more than 40 years until his death in 1994, saw the congregation through the transition with his wife Lillie. The church has offered shelter from several hurricanes
throughout the years including Camille and Betsy, standing its ground until Katrina did major damage.
Volunteers from all over the country have come to help rebuild. The first to show up were the Seventh Day Adventists, said Lillie, who set up a relief center outside of the church offering clothing, food, and more. Like many of those blessed with the help of volun-
teers, Lillie keeps a record to remember those who have passed through.
"The people who have helped us have been so nice, so wonderful-they have been beautiful, beautiful," said Lillie, who was cooking a big spread as she does every day for the volunteers working at the church.
"God is certainly in the plan all the time," said Orelia.
