The Shrine of Our Lady of the Woods
was erected in 1847 by Fr. Stanislaus Buteux. A statue was brought from France a few months after its erection and several years later, a gentleman in serious difficulties, prayed to Our Lady of the Woods for aid, and promised to erect a suitable shrine in her honor should her grace be obtained. True to his word, the gentleman fulfilled his promise and the present shrine was built. The original statue has stood all these years, and more than once in the hurricanes it was thought to have been lost, only to turn up under the leafy debris. Hurled around by hurricanes, standing the test of time,this plaster of paris statue has had no other protection than the tiny dome of the shrine overhead.
The shrine of Our Lady of the Woods is located to the rear of the Our Lady of the Gulf Catholic Church in Bay St. Louis and may be found by exiting the east side of the church and following the tree lined path to the end of the property.
