As will be seen from an examination of the figures given for the start, there was some very CLOSE SAILING as the line was crossed, two of more yachts, then going over the line almost abreast, and as they reached up under the stern of the stakeboat with almost a free wind and starboard tacks aboard, and then went off very close hauled on the same tack immediately after crossing the line, it was only by very neat and clever seamanship that numerous collisions were avoided.
The wind was due south and blowing a good steady breeze, and with the single exception of the "VIOLA" all went away without any mishaps. They were only a few hundred yards on the first stretch, however, when "LUFKI-HUMMA" carried away the tip of her bowsprit and was down for repairs for more than twenty minutes. In the meantime "NEPENTHE" worked beautifully in pinching close to the wind and improving her position rapidly, though her most dangerous rival, "MONTAUK", was also sailing in fine form, and the race between them was one of the most beautiful ever witnessed. The big fleet made a beautiful picture all the way around, but the great interest seemed to settle in the struggles between "NEPENTHE" and "MONTAUK", "ADRIENNE" and "FOLLY", and "FLORENCE" and "AGNES". Had it not been for the mishap to "LUFKI-HUMMA", the race between her and "HYANZA" would have been watched with a great deal of interest, but as it was "RANA" managed to slip in and beat them both, though there seems to be more than a possibility that there has been a mistake made in the computation of the elapsed time as between these boats.
THE FIRST ROUND was completed in the following order:
