The wind was fresher for the second and final turn of the triangle than the first, but there were but few mishaps, though some of the smaller boats were staggering pretty heavily before they could finish. Just after they had entered the second turn of the triangle, "FLORENCE No. 2" carried away her weather stay and was out of the race, while "LUFKI-HAMMA" came very near going over as she rounded the stake.
The leaders in this round were "NEPENTHE" and "MONTAUK", which were still very close together, but as they stood off on the second close haul "NEPENTHE" pointed considerably higher than her rival and appeared to have the race well in hand. As "FLORENCE" and "AGNES" approached the stake for the finish of the first round "AGNES" appeared to be doing slightly better than her rival in running before the wind with her spinnaker set, but as soon as they were close hauled after passing the stake "FLORENCE" pointed higher and rapidly gained in headway, besides pointing higher and working to windward of her rival.
In the homestretch "NEPENTHE" made a splendid picture with her balloon jib boomed out in spinnaker fashion, and she bore down upon the stakeboat with race horse speed, but "MONTAUK" was close behind her, and as the Burgess boat was giving her rival considerable time it was evident toward the finish that the race would be a very close and exciting one. "NEPENTHE" was first out at 2:47:54, but "MONTAUK" was over the line at 2:50:47, and it did not take long to see that the smaller boat had won by a very narrow margin.
