Chaumont, Mme de. - HCHS has a note card "A woman of that name, from Namur, came to Paris to solicit for a lawsuit, which threatened to ruin her. She made one hundred million in speculations under the Law system. That is the lady whose name appears in Louisiana and Mississippi histories. See P. Andre Cochyut: Law, Son Systeme, Son Epoque, Paris, 1853,(pp 87, 100.157.215). She bought the Chateau d'Ivry near Paris, and fed armies of visitors there. Eventually, the list of capitations of Sept. 15, 1722, showed that she was taxed eight million. Like most of the Mississippians enriched under Law, she fell back into the obscurity from which she had risen only a few years before. Some of them, though, got out in time.
