Avery, Mrs. Annie, of Bay St. Louis, Miss., was featured in the NEW YORK DAILY COMMERCIAL ADVERTISER, under the title of "Female Sporting Scribes," in which women who have gained fame at home and abroad as sporting writers are commented upon, the following is said of our talented townslady:  "These ignorant men would have been answered fully had Mrs. Annie Avery, of Bay St. Louis, Miss., been present.  She is an estimable lady of refinement and culture who was postmistress of Bay St. Louis during leveland's first administration.  Thrown on her own resources for a livelihood she has corresponded the NEW ORLEANS PICAYUNE and other Southern papers for some time, and she has always been an alert and capable newsgatherer. When Bay St. Louis became the favorite ground for fighters like Bob Fitzsimmons, Jimmy Carroll, Jack McAuliffe and Jack Scully, this lady reluctantly began chronicling their doings for her papers.  It is greatly to the credit of the fighters that one and all of them have ever treated her with the greatest respect.  Little by little she became interested in their work, and today she can write a pugilistic story that any male scribe in the business need not be ashamed to father.  Mrs. Avery did intend to witness the Hall-Fitzsimmons contest from a latticed box, but she declined on the last moment.  She was right on the result, however, and as she had her salary staked on lucky Bob she drew consolation from her winnings."
