Alphabetical Index of Slave Data

December 21, 2015

Instructions for use of this index:

Several items may appear on any line. First is the name of a slave. Following a slave name, there may be one or two digits, which may be assumed to be his or her age whether or not so indicated. Where there are numbers with more digits, they may be assumed to be valuations, whether or not such digits are shown with a dollar sign.

The last item includes the name of the owner, when known, and Roman numerals I, II, or III. The latter refer to the three lists already published on this website.

Numeral I refers to the post of 2014-07-24.

II refers to the post of 2014-08-13.

III refers to the post of 2015-10-17.

Click on a row to be taken to the page and chapter that name was mentioned.

Other considerations:

It was common for slaves to be listed by only a first name. Often after release from slavery did many take the names of their prior owners, but it is rare to find a last name in documents of the period studied.

When valuations are different for the same name, it might indicate a different person; however, it is noteworthy that valuations can be lower when approximated in an inventory, and higher when that person is sold.
