Powell, James  -  August 5, 1997

James Robert Powell, 73, of Diamondhead, died Tuesday, Aug. 5, 1997, in Diamondhead.

Mr. Powerll was born March 22, 1924, in Port Huron, Mich. He was a resident of Hancock County since July of 1986.

He graduated from Michigan State University with a degree in accounting and worked for the Upjohn Company in Kalamazoo, Mich., until he retired in 1983. Mr. Powell was a sergeant in the Army, and served in Northern France, the Rhineland and Central Europe. He was a Bar Expert in the Army and received the purple Heart.

Mr. Powell was a member of the Diamondhead Community Church, volunteered with Hospice at Memorial Hospital, the Hancock Cunty Food Pantry, and the Diamondhead Church Little School.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John Ironside Powell and Katherine McIntyre Powell, his brother, John McIntyre Powell; and one grandson.

Survivors include his wife, Joann Candler Cooper; two sons and daughters-in-law, James and Mirka Powell of Washington Crossing, Pa and Richard and Erin Powell of Mandeville, La; one sister, Nancy Dobbs Of Neekosa, Wis; three brothers-in-law, Walter Dobbs of Wisconon, Winfield Cooper and John Cooper of Port Huron, two sister-in-law: Carol Cooper of Michigan and Joyce Powell of Ohio; six grandchildren and one great-grandson.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday at Diamondhead Community Church. A reception will follow at the church.

Edmond Fahey Funeral Home in Bay St. Louis is in charge of arrangements.
