Obituary Record

Oliver, Captain  -  December, 1894

DIED AT SEA.

Last Saturday night Albert Tonerey, captain of the oyster sloop Sea Bird, reached Bay St. Louis from Half-moon island, four miles from St. Joseph's light house, and reported that the sloop Wanderer was aground at that point and he found the captain of the boat dead and a lone sailor with the dead man. The sailor, whose name is Brown says the boat is owned by Mr. Gustave Paquet of New Orleans and left that city on December 27th destined for this point to fish oysters The boat was ill fated and encountered a terrific gale, blowing it ashore of the land where the sad scene was discovered. On Wednesday morning of last week, while the craft was aground, the sailor found the captain, whose name is Oliver, dead in the cabin, who, he presumes, died some time during the night.

Captain Oliver was ill when he left New Orleans and grew worse Monday and Tuesday previous to the tie of his death. The Sea Bird returned to the scene with a coffin and carried Messrs. Joseph Clinger, Denny Carco, A. Vassali, and Chas. Brown. The body of the deceased was found in a very decomposed condition and inconvenient to handle, but was coffined and buried on the island. The Wanderer was floated and towed to this place. The sailor is in this city awaiting orders.
