Mauffray, Joseph Oliver  -  Unknown Date

Joseph Oliver Mauffray died at his home, 210 Main Street, at 3 a.m. today following a heart attack a week ago. He was born in Hancock County October 31, 1870, the son of John Casimir Mauffray and Armentine Cuevas Mauffray. On February 8, 1899 he married Dora E. Thompson of Biloxi and from this union there were eight children, Elsa Eugenia, Iolanthe Euthrasia. Funston Alois, Ludger Joseph, Alden Lawrence, Oleah Julia (Mrs. Octave Delph), Judith Octavia (Mrs. Curry Garner), and Joan Agatha (Mrs. Ernest Denathatis.)

Mr. Mauffray started as clerk in a dry goods store. He took over the business in 1903 and in 1905 established a hardware store which he operated in addition to the dry goods store. He operated two stores until 1939, then sold them to two children who operate them.

He also owns Mauffray Fire Insurance Co. Mr. Mauffray was first vice president of the Merchants Bank from 1910-1915; and president from 1915-1925, from which he resigned. He was also president of Peoples Federal Loan Association; member of first sea wall bond commission in 1914; Mississippi State Sea Food Commission; county chairman of war savings stamps; member of the Boy Scout commission; and active in Red Cross work.

He served as city alderman in 1902 and was past state deputy of Knights of Columbus. The funeral will be held at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday from Fahey Funeral Home with a requiem mass at Our Lady of the Gulf Catholic Church at 10 a.m. Interment will be in St. Mary Cemetery.
