NOTE:- Miss Hettie Crowell was born Sept. 29, 1841 in Rahway, N. J. Her family moved to New Orleans when she was quite young. Judge A. K. Aken was her uncle who married Jane Cowand. Jane had inherited a strip of land from her father's estate on North Beach, which today would be 810 North Beach and Just next to and south of the Vegas property. In 1876 Miss Hettie purchased this strip of land from her Uncle Aken and built a home on the property where the family then lived. Miss Hettie's mother (Ann Crowell) and other members of the family, including Judge Aken, are buried in the Cowand Family Cemetery on Leopold Street in Bay St. Louis. Miss Eula Jones and Miss Hettie Crowell, who were first cousins, continued to live in this their home on North Beach until they died. Neither had ever married. In 1925 Miss Hettie died at the age of 84 and was also buried in the Cowand Family cemetery, as was Miss Etila Jones who died in 1926. December 1989
