BAY ST. LOUIS ? While Pass Christian artist John McDonald has been adding detail to the faces on his ?Promenade Mural,? Bay High School art students across the street have been painting a mural copied from a work by Bay folk artist Alice Moseley.
The city will have an official ribbon-cutting for the two works of art at 5 p.m. Saturday as part of the monthly Second Saturday celebration.
Moseley?s work, entitled ?The Pot of Gold at the End of the Rainbow in Bay St. Louis,? decorates the One Magnolia Place wall on Main Street near Beach Boulevard.
Under the guidance of Bay High art
teacher Ken Matthew, the students have been working on the mural since August, a few hours at a time Saturday and Sunday mornings.
McDonald painted his mural ? 85 feet long and 18 feet high ? on the west wall of the Hancock Insurance Agency. It depicts a pavilion-style brick building where a contemporary audience on the top level looks down on a sweeping panorama of several centuries of history.
The murals were created for The Renaissance Project, a program designed to resurrect an awareness of the community?s collective roots through arts and story gathering.
The project was partially funded by a $20,000 Artists Build Communities grant from the Mississippi Arts Commission and sponsored by the Gulf Coast Community Foundation.
Prints of both murals are available at Serenity Gallery.
