(Continued from Page 19) miliar symbol of the druggist. And if you are lucky you may find behind the counter the 91 year old son of the founder, Rene deMontluzin, Sr., who himself enjoys the distinction of being the oldest living registered pharmacist in Mississippi.
HANCOCK’S SEVERAL CITIES BY THE SEA
Immediately west of the $9,000,000 two mile Bay St. Louis bridge on U.S. 90, Hancock County’s long and lovely Beach Drive lures the tourist and traveler into a semi-circle of scenic beauty. To the north at the traffic light this Beach Drive thrusts a long finger alongside the Bay of St. Louis, affording a leisurely and panoramic view of this beautiful body of water and also carrying members’ and visitors’ cars to the Bay-Waveland Yacht Club and to the homes of the Bay’s waterfront residents. To the south of the highway it winds past the long municipal Fishing Pier and Sand Beach in front of the historic Reed Hotel of Bay St. Louis — bends away from the bay and follows the seawall around the shore of the Gulf.
Here tlie profusion of private and public piers resemble the teeth on a comb— proof positive that the solid citizens of Bay St. Louis are not bothered by that “all work and no play” adage. Here, along this Beach Drive, Bay St. Louis serenely blends into Waveland (where is located the historic “Pirate House” used by the pirate Jean Lafitte as Coast headquarters, famous for its slave dungeon and underground passage), Waveland into Clermont Harbor and Clermont Harbor into Lakeshore without hardly a break in the cozily crowded homes, summer camps and institutions that face the blue beauty of the Gulf until the seawall and the Beach Drive end simultaneously. After taking this saltwater route and after scouting the County’s bayous and rivers, you won’t need a Chamber of Commerce folder to tell you that this cluster of coastal communities along the L&N railroad at the extreme southeast end of Hancock have it made! Working and living and relaxing right smack in the middle of a year round freshwater and saltwater fishing paradise where they never need to fish twice in the same spot—with the fringe benefits of power boating and sailing either in their front or back yard.
WAVELAND AND CLERMONT HARBOR
Since these two Coast communities are the closest to New Orleans they have been noted for generation after generation as the summer colony for New Orleans business men and their families, the menfolk commuting to town every working day. For years they were June to September communities with their residents returning home on Labor Day with the certainty and celerity of a regiment breaking camp.
But that pattern has changed. Recently it is very noticeable that many of the regulars who came to loaf are staying to live. Those who formerly spent
