On February 10, 1699 the French dropped anchor off Ship Island. The first physical landing on the Mississippi Gulf Coast occurred on February 13, 1699. The Mississippi Coast Historical & Genealogical Society celebrates the birth of the Gulf Coast and a colorful heritage of almost 300 years by sponsoring the 2nd annual Mississippi Coast History Week.
TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 12 MARDI GRAS DAY
It is fitting that Mardi Gras day has fallen during Mississippi Coast History Week in 1991. The celebration, although not sponsored by the Mississippi Coast Historical & Genealogical Society, has been observed since the arrival of the French in 1699.
THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 14 7:00 p.m.
"An Evening of History" will be held at the Biloxi Library & Cultural Center. Presentations will be given by Jack Elliott, Historical Archaeologist with the MS Department of Archives & History on rural coast houses and Dr. Val Husley, Curator of the Sam Houston Memorial Museum, Huntsville, Texas, on French Colonial Life Style on the Mississippi Gulf Coast - people, clothing, artifacts, maps and concessions.
SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 17 2:00 p.m.
A presentation, "The Mississippi Frontier and the Nation's Destiny", will be given at the Biloxi Public Library and Cultural Center by Dr. John D. W. Guice. Dr. Guice is a professor of history at the University of Southern Mississippi. The event is sponsored by the Biloxi/Harrison County Library System, Mississippi Museum of Art/Gulf Coast, Mississippi Humanities Council and the Mississippi Coast Historical & Genealogical Society. Dr. Guice will review the frontier stages of the region in the early nineteenth century.
THE PUBLIC IS INVITED TO THESE EVENTS NO ADMISSION CHARGE ART CONTEST
First through fourth grade students in Hancock, Harrison and Jackson Counties participated in an art contest on the French period in the coast's history. The winners' art will be on exhibit at the Biloxi Public Library during History Week. This contest was sponsored by the Mississippi Coast Historical & Genealogical Society and the Mississippi Museum of Art/Gulf Coast.
