AN ACT to incorporate ihe towns of Sliicldsborouf/li. I’asa Christian and Biloxi, in.tlio county of Hancock, and for oilier purposes.

of Mississippi, as follows, to wit, That the tract of country lying east of a line beginning on the sea shore where the line between sections 41 and 42 of township no. 8 of range no. 14 west intersects said shore, tlicnce running north to Jourdan river, thencc along the western bank of said river, and the western -bank of the bay of St. Louis, to the place of beginning, shall hereafter be designated by the name of the town of Shieldsborough.	' •	'
§ 2. Be it further enacted, Tl&t the landhol-o!ficert" ^erS!) freeholders and householders within said town shall, on the first Monday in'March, in cach )'car, hold a meeting to commence at 10 o’clock in the forenoon, and close at four o’clock in the afternoon, and elect, by ballot, five selectmen, a majority of whom shall at all times constitute a quorum to do business; also a town treasurer, an assessor and collector, who shall hold their oilices for one year, and until their successors be qualified.

Shieldsborough, and who shall ex officio be vested with all the powers, and discharge the duties vested and required by law of a justice of the peace, within said town, and whose duties it shall be to preside and keep order at the meeting. of the selectmen. A
§ 4. Be it farther enactcd, That the select- Name men shall be a body politic and corporate in fact and in name, by the style of the president and selectmen of the town of Shieldsborough, and by that name they and their successors shall have perpetual succession, be capable in law to purchase, take, receive, hold and enjoy to the use of them' and their successprs, real estate in fee simple, or any lesser interest,, and the same to lease, release, sell, alien or convey, and all Gcnoml manner of goods, chattels and personal estate power*, to purchase, take, rcceive, hold and enjoy, to sell, or otherwise dispose of, and by the same name (hoy and their successors shall be liable and capable in law of suing and being sued, pleading and be impleaded, in • all manner of suits or actions, either in law or equity, and do all other acts and deeds which arc incident to bodies corporate.
§ 5. Be it further enacted, That the select- Power i™ men may raise such sums of money as they may ["J80 mo' think necessary for the supply of said town, to ey be assessed upon the landholders, freeholders and householders within said town, according to the regulations to be established by said selectmen, and collected by the collector, and paid in the town treasury, to be disposed of in such manner as the said selectmen shall direct: Provided, the sums so to be raised shall not in any year exceed twelve and a half cents for every hundred dollars worth of property in said town liable to assessment.
