VOL. 96, NO. 101
BAY ST. LOUIS, MISSISSIPPI
THURSDAY, DECEMBER 17, 1987
SINGLE COPY, 25 CENTS
MARKER UNVEILED?Struggling against brisk beachfront winds Sunday morning to unvail an historic marker at the foot of Ulinan Avenue in Bay St. Louis are City Councilman Lisa Cowan and Mayor Victor Fran-ckiewiscz, both at left. Also participating in the ceremonies are Dr. William Bradford of Waveland, president of Hancock County Historical Society, and City Councilman Jim Thriffiley, right. The marker commemorates an 1814 naval battle near the entrance to the Bay of St. Louis
which was the last time the U.S. Navy was required to defend the continental shores of the United States against a foreign invader. Cannon salutes were included in the ceremony in honor of the six Americans who died in the battle which allowed Gen. Andrew Jackson time to set up defenses in Chalmette, La. where he defeated the British in the Battle of New Orleans. (Photo by Uirry Timmerman)
