A growing consideration of this Department is the placement of markers. Originally the markers were intended to inform motorists. However, with the development of dual-lane highways and increased speed limits, this function has nearly ceased to apply. Too, the greatest threat to the markers is the automobile. The Department urges that in site selection, consideration be given to accessiblity to pedestrian traffic and safety from the automobile.
I hope this information will be useful to you as you consider sites in Hancock County that you would have marked by state historical markers. Please let me know if you have questions which were not addressed in this letter. We will be happy to work with you in any way possible.
Sincerely,
V
