Bay of Saint Louis Characteristics
The Bay of St. Louis has two small rivers and one bayou flowing into it. To the northwest is the Jourdan River, the largest of the three, thus affecting current set and drift the most. To the northeast is the Wolf River, fairly large, but having little effect except in the extreme northeast side of the Bay. Bayou Portage, located on the east side of the Bay, is relatively small and has little current drift.
While you are sailing on the Bay there will be little fluctuation in flood and ebb, thus very little current.. However, there are several variables to be aware of, such as stronger currents on ebb tide than flood tide. The more predominant currents are from the Jourdan, and the set of the water seems to be directly to the middle of the Bay, then sets toward the southwest. It continues sweeping in toward the BWYC and starts out to the middle again.
We are sure that you will find sailing on the Bay of St. Louis a pleasurable experience. Please feel tree to ask questions as to previous rainfalls and weather conditions that might have some effect during the championship.
Commodore Charles A. Breath, III
