Sir Thomas J. Lipton Cup Championship at BWYC on Labor Day Weekend 2010
Bay St. Louis - It is a pleasure to again remind everyone that Bay-Waveland Yacht Club (BWYC) under the leadership of BWYC Commodore Christopher F. Trapani will proudly be hosting the 90th GYA Sir Thomas J. Lipton Cup Championship Regatta at its beautiful 2 year old yacht club facility in Bay St. Louis this coming Labor Day Weekend, Friday, September 3 through Monday, September 6, 2010.
Serving as General Chairman for this prestigious sailing event will be former BWYC Commodore Corky Hadden and Clinton T. Edwards will serve as Principal Race Officer for the championship event.
BWYC earned the right, honor and privilege to host the event by winning the 2009 Lipton Cup Championship last Labor Day Weekend on Mobile Bay at Buccaneer Yacht Club (BucYC).
It is interesting to note that 2010 begins a new decade (the 10th decade) of Lipton Cup competition. Looking at the last decade, BWYC won the coveted Lipton Cup 5 times in the years 2001, 2004, 2006, 2007 and 2009. Pass Christian Yacht Club (PCYC) won the Lipton Trophy 2 times in 2000 and in 2003. Southern Yacht Club (SYC) won it 1 time in 2002 and Buccaneer Yacht Club (BucYC)
won 1 time in 2008. The year 2005 was a wash out due to the widespread devastation of Hurricane Katrina.
Lipton Cup Challenge Trophy inscriptions and Past Winner Records from 1920 to the present date of August 14, 2010 show that Southern Yacht Club (SYC) has won the Sir Thomas J. Lipton Trophy 19 times plus 3 ties for first place. Bay-Waveland Yacht Club (BWYC) has won it a total of 19 times. Pensacola Yacht Club (PYC) has won it 11 times with 2 ties for first place. St. Andrews Bay Yacht (St.ABYC) has won 6 times with 1 tie for first place. Biloxi Yacht Club (BYC) has won the trophy 7 times. Pass Christian Yacht Club (PCYC) has 7 overall wins. New Orleans Yacht Club won the Lipton Trophy 4 times. St. Petersburg Yacht Club (St.PeteYC) won 3 times with 1 tie for 1st place. Sarasota Yacht Club (SaraYC) has 3 wins overall. Buccaneer Yacht Club (BucYC) has 2 wins overall and Mobile Yacht Club (MYC) also has 2 wins for the Lipton Cup. Eastern Shore Yacht Club (ESYC) has 1 win with 1 tie for 1st place. Gulfport Yacht Club (GYC) has 1 win overall for the Sir Thomas J. Lipton Cup.
While the competition will be strong from other GYA Yacht Clubs, the regatta host and defending champion Bay-Waveland Yacht Club (BWYC) will be seeking its 20th overall win of the Sir Thomas J. Lipton Trophy in the 90* edition of the event this Labor Day Weekend. Southern Yacht Club (SYC) will be seeking its 20th out-write Lipton Cup victory as well.
It should be an exciting weekend at BWYC both ashore and on the water. Yacht Clubs from all around the 5 state Gulf Yachting Association (GYA) will be competing for the GYA Championship Title.
