Some BWYC History Notes
As BWYC Historian 2002, I have been urged on several occasions this year by Commodore Corky Hadden, by former Commodore and the current "Minister of Propaganda" Mike Chapoton to write up some history material about the perpetual trophies of Bay-Waveland Yacht Club. I have long hesitated to do this, feeling that and I have advocated that this should be the job of a specially appointed Trophy Committee willing to provide the time, research and detail that this project really deserves and not the job of the historian.
Based on their urging and since we do not currently have a Trophy Committee in place, I thought I would select three BWYC Trophies which are competed for annually and try to provide some information about them including the names of some of the recipients.
The three trophies which I have arbitrarily selected are the C. A. Breath, Sr., the Commodore Charles L. Lozano and the Commodore Kenneth W. Pepperdene Memorial Trophies. You will note that they are all memorial trophies and are used as awards in BWYC intraclub sailing competition.
I selected (arbitrarily) these three trophies mainly for three reasons. 1. I chose the Breath Trophy since my young granddaughter Katherine Santa Cruz won it this year in 2002, joining her aunt Elizabeth Santa Cruz ‘75 and her uncle Edgar Santa Cruz ‘73 as winners of this prestigious BWYC Trophy. Mike’s daughter Melissa Chapoton is a two time winner of this trophy having won it in 1998 and in 2001. In researching the trophy, I found that Missy Breath won it in 1983 and Don Coffer won it in 1968. Missy is the great granddaughter and Don is a great grandson of the late C. A. Breath, Sr. who the trophy is dedicated in the memory of. I also found it noteworthy that the Stieffel name is engraved on the Breath Trophy 5 times including Charlie Cady ‘99 whose mother’s maiden name is Stieffel and the Eagan name is on the trophy 3 times. 2. I chose the Lozano Trophy since Corky’s young son William Hadden won it in 2002 joining the likes of Commodores Gene Walet, III ‘01, Judy Reeves ‘00 and Lucien Gex, Jr. ’87. And 3. I chose the Pepperdene Trophy since Mike’s daughter Melissa Chapoton won this trophy in 2002 and as I mentioned above, she is a two time winner of the Breath Trophy. I would be remiss if I didn’t point out that Katherine’s grandmother Grace Santa Cruz ‘80, her aunt Elizabeth Santa Cruz ‘78 and her
