Some BWYC History Notes
As many know, the rich in history Bay-Waveland Yacht Club was originally established 115 years ago in 1896 under the leadership of Commodore T. R. Richardson who is a great, great grandfather of Commodore Basil T. Kennedy. Basil is a current stockholder and an active member of BWYC. It is interesting to note how the beginning relates to other yacht clubs in our area, region and around the country. This is a drawing of the clubhouse of BWYC in 1898 which was located on a pier over the water at the east end of Washington Street and North Beach Boulevard. The club facility was destroyed by the powerful hurricane of 1915.

Some good age comparisons in the yacht club industry are: Mobile Yacht Club established in 1847 claims to be the second oldest yacht club in the United States and the oldest on the Gulf Coast. New York Yacht Club was founded in 1844 and claims to be the oldest yacht club in the country. Biloxi Yacht Club was founded in 1849 and Southern Yacht Club was established in 1849 as well. Gulfport Yacht Club was established in 1903 and Pensacola Yacht Club was founded in 1908. On the west coast, St. Francis Yacht Club of San Francisco, California was founded in 1927.
