Completely exhausted vith the exertions of the day, the party vent to rest early, and by 10 not a stir could be heard from either.*
The Morning o£ the Fourth
Shadowy wharves stretching out like the arms of some colossal cuttle-fish through the blue obscurity, ghostly sails, still and snowy in the morning mists, a shimmering neutral tinted sea, and pervading and rejuvenading all, the glorious morning breeze, what anchorite would dare disparage the dawning of July Fourth ? Was it any wonder the assembled merrymakers, marching to stirring strains to their rendezvous fairly cheered, and that the morning plunge into the briny depths was taken with a shout of satisfaction ?
f Of course the Fourth of July wouldn't be *fth of July without an } American flag, and of course a very large one was stretched between

The band, in a fit of patriotism, broke out with the "Star Spangled Banner," and the star spangled banner waved in recognition of the compliment. 'Tis true the unreconstructed cornets and trombones dropped into "Dixie'J almost the next minute, and that during the day toasts were drank to the "philanthropic but mistaken fifty-six," but few firemen's festivals pass unseasoned with jollity, and their hundred Jests, smacking of the latter day though they did, would not have been objected to by the most "truly loll."

The little outbreak of patriotism over, and an attempt to proclaim the undying glory of the country by sending up a batch of tissue paper balloons having ignominiously failed, the band struck up the Lady Blessy schottische, and at once a score of couples were whirling through the parlor and around the broad varandahs.
This in due time vas followed by the Gauche quadrille, the Hawkins polka, the Bedell valtz, Mason cotillion, Hennemore redown, and Henley reel.
Then came the "Times" lancers, the "Republican" mazourka, and in fact a polka or a pchottisch named for egch one of the city papers
