Imagine a warehouse as big as an airplane hanger handling sufficient food to feed 30,000 people every day. That is the scene at the Emergency Food :Depot set up at Gulfport air-1 port to provide food items for | people in Harrison, Hancock, I Jackson and Stone Counties. |
Hugh Snowden of Gulfport was appointed by Gov. John Bell Williams to be manager of this giant warehouse. He and his staff of clerks and guides are volunteers. And this, not more food, is the primary problem of the depot. Additional volunteers are needed to lighten the heavy work load of those now working there.
The majority of the food items are being received from the U.S. Department of Agriculture surplus supply. More of rit comes through purchase orders issued by the Emergency Operations Center, at. Gulfport and the balance from individual donations.
There are cases and cases of assorted miscellaneous food items being sorted by the labor force at the deopt. These are mostly military personnel but also include inmates from the state penitentiary.
Using government figures for quantities required by certain numbers of people, the depot ^dispatches food daily to each of 34 distribution points along the Coast.
Snowden arrived at the depot one morning last week to provide use of a pickup for delivering food. After finding a degree of disorder at the depot, he jinade inquiries as to manage-iment of the facility and ended ;up being appointed by the gov-j ernor to supervise the operation.
The depot is staffed strictly by volunteers as far as the management p e rsor.nel but more are needed. Snowden, operator of Coast House Movers. said he needs shipping clerks, receiving clerks, guides and fleet dispatchers. Most of these personnel are needed for shifts at all hours.	'
