Barge Troubles . . .
This barge has been the center of attention for many days now since salvage operations began a short time after Hurricane Camille left it aground on U.S. Highway 90 at 33rd avenue. Now nearing the water, the barge Monday rammed the retainer wall, knocking out a portion of it, while salvagers tugged with cables attached to offshore vessels. The salvage operation has involved digging out around the barge and
pumping water into the cavity to make the vessel float. The sand wall between the barge and deeper water is then broken and the barge is carried by the rush of water as well as tugged by the offshore vessels. It travels several feet each time this operation is completed.
