ing one long blast after another.Tom-my Ruspoli, Anthony Johnson and I drove to the Richelieu Apartments to see if the prople have been evacuated.
Ten to fifteen couples are busy carrying furniture from one floor to another.
“Mr. Jones, are you going to get all the people to evacuate the apartments?”, wc asked.
“No, sir”, Mr. Jones replied.“Mrs. Jones and I plus ten to twelve other people will stay, but the rest will leave.**
Wc told everyone to leave, as the three of us went from room to room.
“Mr. Peralta”, Mr. Jones said,“We arc going to stay on the third floor and watch the property.I will sec you tomorrow morning.”
That was the last time I saw Mr. and Mrs. Jones alive. They both drowned that night.
The worst part of the storm was between 11 and 1. 1 went to my brother’s house to check my family just before the height of the storm. Water was coming from all directions.
1 was standing on the porch when the water came over Scenic drive. The Castelin family were trapped in their home on one corner of Heirn and Second. A rope was tied around a tree in the yard as attempts were made to rescue them.
As George McDonald walked across the street from the health center, the current hit him and he went down in the water. He grabbed the rope and then helped the Castelin family over to the Peralta’s.
Looking up,I saw two amphibious vehicles sitting on the sidewalk by the County Health Clinic, manned by the National Guard.
“Are your people going out there tonight?** I shouted.
“No, sir. Wc*re going out in the morning,” was the reply.
‘Til tell you what. Give me a dri- ** vcr and we will go out now,” I replied.
At about 11:30 or midnight wc proceeded west on Second street to wards the Fire Station. The first couple in the duck lived next to Mr. St. Amant’s pressing shop. This rcscuc (Continued on Page 30)
