LCNG HEACH? MISS. —Our ram-blingold Victorian home in Long Beach, had surely withstood worse in its time. We had ridden out so many other hurricanes in beach homes; we felt safe in this one! higher than the predicted tides, more like a fortress than a house. Chr decision to stay was reinforced ty the warm security we felt as Camille began to rage ourside and the house was not even trembling. The power failed, the phone lines were down, arid the wind building its force in gusts didn’t even shake our awnings much less our confidence.
rfy husband John, our 8-year-old son Charlie, his house-guest Taiy Preisser. our neice Idle Prescott} and friends from fess Chris tian sat with me in our living room as we listened to the radio reports of the stonn’s progress in our candlelit living room. We were waiting for the eye to reach us so we could take stock and brace ourselves and the house for the whiplash effects of the other side of the stonn.
