Winter SeasonTurns Eyes to Buffer Zone
As winter settles over NSTL, the spacious wooded area making up the acoustic easement area (buffer zone) becomes inviting to area residents for hunting, camping, woodcutting and fishing. Cutting wood for the fireplace is especially tempting during these days of energy conservation and hunting is very alluring to the sports minded. .-1

/ However, the vast majority of the
i J 28,328 acres in the buffer zone are owned
by individuals and private concerns. The
landowners retain all rights to this land
except for the construction of habitable
i .structures. Landowners use this land for
| timbering, farming, cattle grazing and
sA other purposes as they see fit.
Entering these areas for any reason, without first obtaining written permission from the landowner, is in violation of the law. Trespassers are subject to prosecution.
Signs have been erected on roads throughout the buffer zone, clearly
marking the boundaries of tne acoustic easement area. NASA has placed 38 of these signs in various locations in an effort to inform the public of the perimeter of the buffer zone.
To insure enforcement of these restrictions, property in the buffer zone continues to be under surveillance by local law officials, the Corps of Engineers and NSTL’s security force.
The government owns in “fee simple” the 13,480 acres where the NSTL installation is in operation in Hancock County. This property is clearly marked and fenced and badges are required to enter.
