allowed us to actually see what was going on. Couldn’t we have rented a tape and done the same thing at home?
Unfortunately our seats were in the infamous “Cough and Talk” section. The woman behind me had an advanced case of what we use dot call whooping cough. It wasi’t so much that she interfered with my hearing Pavarotti, but I just knew that every cough resulted in millions of germs being deposited on my head. The guy to my left did a play be play analysis for his date. It must have been his date; nobody talks to his wife that much. For the finale, he hummed one particularly catchy tune.
After two encores, it was over. Pavarotti the soprano, the orchestra were all great. I never understood a single word he sang, but he can sing! We beat the traffic out and were home in 45 minutes.
Somehow, in retrospect, it wasn’t that bad. After all I can now say “been there, done that.” Unfortunately they didn’t sell tee shirts. Surely people who would fork over $200 for a ticket would be pushovers for a $30 tee shirt. Imagine the shirt, “Pavarotti in his traditional stance, arms wide apart, with a hot dog in one hand and a beer in the other. Oh, and printed below the picture would be the words, “The Classical Beerman.”
From the safety of my home state, Mississippi, I look back on this event and guess that it was all worth while. Not for the cultural experience but because the credits earned with my wife will be used to see Reba, Dwight, Garth or Pam when they come to Mississippi.
