My name is George Arbo. I own and operate Arbo Sawmill on Bayou Gillary. I also have a general mercantile store in town.
Bay Saint Louis is known for pine trees. They make good lumber. We cut the trees, throw them in the bayou and float them to the mill where we plane them into lumber. In our mill we specialize in tongue-in-groove. That is where on piece of lumber laps over another. Have you ever tried to get a nail through a piece of pine tongue-and-groove? Get an electric drill or you will wear out your hammer.
Our mill was in a good location. It was near the L & N Railroad. Transportation is a big item in making and selling lumber. We had water and rail at our doorstep.
I have the oldest cedar head-marker in Cedar Rest Cemetery. I have to say tomb ?marker? because it is not a tomb ?stone?. I had a companion cedar marker made for my wife but it rotted out on bottom and got swept away sometime in the last 12 years. If any of you people have a cedar tree, would you please give a slab to the Historical Society so they can replace my wife?s cedar marker.
I miss my wife.
