Margaret Gregg Flagler?s grandfather, David Gregg of the clan MacGregor, was born in Argyle, Scotland, and served as a captain in Cromwell?s army. He settled in Londonderry, Ireland, after the Restoration. In 1689, he was massacred by Irish Catholics, but his wife and four young sons managed to escape.
In 1717, these four sons - Samuel, David, Andrew, and John -emigrated to Boston. Late in life, John/ finally settled in the Cedar Swamp community, Williamsburg, in 1752. After settlement there, three daughters - Margaret, Janet, and Mary -were born to the couple.
Marion Francis Baxter?s maternal grandmother, Mary Elizabeth Ervin Baxter, was descended from James Ervin and Elizabeth James (her great grandparents) who emigrated to Williamsburg Township in 1732, having sailed from Belfast, Ireland. Williamsburg Township was named after Elizabeth?s brother, William James. During the Revolutionary War, members of the Ervin, Baxter, and James families all served with Francis Marion, the "Swamp Fox." Mary Elizabeth?s mother was a Marion (Martha Wickham Marion), and her father was named Sam Ervin.
A latter day kinsman was the former United States Senator from North Carolina, the Hon. Sam J. Ervin, Jr.
