On October 16, 19-1-1, a; m m-.ir Frelenberg, Germany, he died instantly when a mortar shell landed .it In- livi .is he was trying to rescue a wounded comrade. I le was posthumously awarded ilu- Purple I leart and the Bronze Star.
On Flag Day, June 14, 1969, at the Freedoms Foundation at Valiev Forge, Pennsylvania, a ?Freedoms Wall" was dedicated. 1 lermann led an ! exemplary life as a Ij and young man, ' leaving a record of ! achievement at Bay High School in Ba) St. Louis?footbailj scholastics, drama, and politics. He worked Ins way through Ole Miss a night clerk at the Colonial Hotel in
Oxford. A liberal arts major, 1 lermann continued his record ol achievement at tfi University. He was active in ROTC, the Hermaean Literary Society' (president), the Catholic Club, YMCA, and the University Greys. 1 le also attained a superic scholarship record and was elected to membership in Phi Fta Sigma and Ornicri Delta Kappa.
In 1942 Hermann succeeded Billy Sam as president of the Associated Student Body and held that position until he left for the Army in January 1943. FIc was chosen to the 1943 Ole Miss Student Hall of Fame in recognition of ?his
