JOHN DANIELL (1707-1764)
John, the only son of Robert Daniell and Martha Wainwright, was bom March 29,1707, and died in 1764 (57 yrs). His will dated Dec. 23, 1763, was recorded May 31, 1768, in Charleston Probate Court, and is located in North Carolina Wills, Brunswick Co., North Carolina..
John was a ship owner (merchant seaman as his father) for a short time. The family legend about him goes (short version) that while at sea his ship was attacked by pirates. Since pirates were known not to wear shoes, John instructed his crew to put on their shoes and break glass on the deck of their ship. The pirates cut their feet upon boarding and were defeated. The pirate ship was heavily laden with valuables and money. John sold both ships, purchased a large plantation and became a farmer where he remained the rest of his life. Not knowing anything about farming, an overseer was engaged to handle the running of the plantation. This legend repeats in records maintained in various descendents who had not had contact in many years. Charleston records document the fact that he owned a merchant ship.
Soon after his marriage in 1738/9 he sold all of his holdings in Charleston and purchased land in North Carolina, just over the South Carolina line. He was described as being a very prosperous, wealthy, and influential planter, owning many plantations and possessions. John?s children were highly educated for that time. His home was on the Lockwood Folly River in New Hanover,	North Carolina, now	Brunswick	Co.	in	the
area of what is now Supply, North Carolina.
