PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, students 2nd teachers observe and celebrate a School Reunion in Hancock County at the VALENA C. JONES school in Bay St. Louis; and
WHEREAS, Hancock County recognizes and values the efforts of Mrs. Valena C. Jones, bom on August 3, 1872 in Bay St. Louis began teaching schools in rural Mississippi about 1890, and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Jones was principal of the Bay St. Louis Negro School 1892-1897 and taught from 1897-1901 as a public school teacher in New Orleans; and
WHEREAS, after the marriage of Mrs. Jones to the Reverend Robert E. Jones, resident Bishop of the New Orleans area for Methodist Episcopal Church, Mrs. Jones no longer taught school but kept actively interested in education; and
WHEREAS, several schools have been named in honor of Mrs. Jones, being a very special school in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi named VALENA C. JONES; and
WHEREAS, Hancock County is proud and honored to have the Valena C. Jones school reunion celebrated in Hancock County, Mississippi; and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Hancock County Board of Supervisors proclaims the 7th, 8th and 9th of July 2000 as THE VALENA C. JONES SCHOOL REUNION, and we encourage all students and citizens to recognize their achievements and say a small thank you to Mrs. Valena C. Jones, for improving the quality of life.
