His widowed grandmother moved to Hancock County, MS with her family in 1774 and purchased land - see Marie Elizabeth Marcossin's page for details. This fact would place him born in Mississippi. Also, looking at the 1880 Hancock census, his children identify the place of birth for their mother and father as Mississippi. Also, the baptism record of his daughter, Louise Victoire LaFontaine at St. Louis Cathedral states that her parents are both "natives and residents of Bay St. Louis."
