CHAPTER I First Generation ?A
*A-1 WILLIAM LEARNED1 progenitor of the family in America, camc from Bermondsey, County Surrey, England, with his wife Goodith (Judith, Coodwife?} and his only soti Isaac-, landing ai Charlestown tn the Massachusetts Bay Colony sometime prior to October 1632. He was admitted with ?Goodith, his wife", to the First Church of Charlestown, 6 October 1632. (C.E. Banks Winthrop Fleet, Baltimore, 1961, p. 79); he was elected freeman, 14 March 1634, selectman, 13 February 1635/6, and, 26 February 1638, me r of a committee of six: "Mr. Increase Nowell, Mr. Zach. Sims, Mr. Jno. Greene, Mr. John Hayward, Sergt. Ralph Sprague and William Learned were desired to consider of some things tending toward a body of laws." (MCR I, 368.) William moved to Woburn in 1641 or 1642, and was one of seven founders of First Church of Woburn, 14 August 1642; constable, selectman, 13 April 1643, and again, 9 February 1645; he died 1 March 1646. His widow, (mentioned also as "Jane?) died 24 January 1661. (NE H&G Register, x, p. 162; The Learned Family ed. ii, 1898, p. 10-18.) William was buried in Wobum, but the graves were moved many years later to another location, and, in 1930, Henry Dexter Learned10, J-592, did not find the Learned tombstones.
