Peyton Lee was the fourth son of James Lee and Celia Rogers.
Both he and his wife, Mary Ann Lee Williams were probably bom in the Black River District of New Hanover County, North Carolina, near Wilmington. Peyton and Mary Ann were married prior to 1830. They were listed in the New Hanover County, N. C. 1830 census as follows:
