The Santa Cruz Family - Joseph and James Santa Cruz, from the island of Majorca in the Balearic Islands, off the eastern coast of Spain, came to Biloxi during the 1840's. James married Ann Doulen. He died at a rather young age, leaving Ann to rear in Biloxi their five children. Joseph, the more outgoing of the two brothers got involved in a partnership to build boats on Deer Island. In the late 1840's he sold his interest and moved to Bayshore Drive in North Biloxi. By this time he had two daughters, Adele and Elizabeth, by Clementine Carco. When that marriage broke up, he married Ellen Barry, by whom he had two sons, John and Tony. When Ellen died in 1860, it took some time before he re-married, this time to Mary Abli of Switzerland. Eight children blessed this marriage: Fritz, Rudolph, Adolph, Randolph, Catherine, Margaret, lmogene and Laura.
