June 6, 1889 by Eliza “Jane” McArthur while she was living in Alexandria, LA. This letter was last in the possession of B. L. Dossett who lived near Kiln, MS.
B.	Solomon “Sol” McArthur - bom on October 3, 1834 and died November 27, 1891 according to “Grave Registration of Military Veterans” on microfilm at the Jackson,
MS Archives. This record also states that Sol fought with the CSA Co. A, 17th Miss. Battalion (Cavalry). He enlisted on July 9, 1863 and was discharged on April 4,
1865. He is buried at Turtleskin Cemetery near the Pearl River - Hancock County line with a Civil War headstone. He appears in the 1850, 1870, and 1880 Hancock County censuses. In 1850 he is listed as bom in 1834. What appears to be the baptism of this Solomon McArthur is found at St. Louis Cathedral (Bapt. Book 15, pages 27 and 28, act 69). This record lists Antoine McArthur, bom on September 30, 1834 and names both of his parents. While the month and day are slightly off, the year is correct. This birth date fits perfectly between the birth dates of siblings, James L. McArthur in 1833 and Elizabeth McArthur in 1836.
Sol married Mary Matilda “Mush” McCarty, the daughter of Largent McCarty, listed in the 1850 Hancock census. She was bom inl834 and died in 1926 according to her headstone in Turtleskin Cemetery. Their marriage is recorded in the Hancock County Court House on October 25, 1860. This family name was in fact “McCarty” as it is today. They were not related to our McArthur family, and we have much more information on this family in our files. The family lived in Hancock County north of Pearlington. If Sol’s wife, old “Aunt Mush,” was half as mean as family say she was, she was a living terror. From all indications, she was the dominate member of that household. The children of this couple were compiled from census records, church records at Our Lady of the Gulf Catholic Church in Bay St.
Louis, and from information supplied by Mr. Ervin Ladner of Nicholson, MS. They had the following children:
1.	John Monroe McArthur - bom April 18, 1861 according to his O. L. G. baptism record. It should be noted that children John thru James were baptized on the same date of March 26, 1876 in Bay St. Louis. John’s full name was John Monroe McArthur according to his family. He married Mary M. “Sis” Bennett and lived in Hancock County. They had one son called John M., Jr. that married Wilemena Louise “Mena” Finhold. John Jr.’s headstone in Cedar Rest Cemetery in B. S. L. says he was bom in 1882 and died in 1947 (see our Francois Favre History for more on Louise Finhold).
2.	William Albert Peter McArthur - bom April 5, 1863 according to his baptism record. He lived near Pearlington and died a bachelor.
3.	Thomas Largent McArthur - bom April 18, 1865 according to his baptism record and died on October 11, 1946 according to information by Ervin Ladner. He lived and died in Pearlington. He married 1) Premilla M. Ballard, 2) Mary Jenkins, and
3)	Annie Bryant. By Jenkins he had one daughter that married and
lived in Slidell, LA.
